1762, The Georgian Age of Sail: For his first command, John Cavendish is given a ship-the HMS Meteor-and a crew, both in need of repair and discipline. He's determined to make a success of their first mission, and hopes the well-liked lieutenant Alfred Donwell will stand by his side as he leads his new crew into battle: stopping the slave trade off the coast of Algiers.
Alfie knows their mission is futile, and that their superiors back in England will use the demise of this crew as impetus for war with the Ottoman Empire. But the darker secret he keeps is his growing attraction for his commanding officer-a secret punishable by death. With the arrival of his former captain-and lover-on the scene of the disastrous mission, Alfie is torn between the security of his past and the uncertain promise of a future with the straight-laced John.
Against a backdrop of war, intrigue, and personal betrayal, the high seas will carry these men through dangerous waters from England to Africa to the West Indies in search of a safe harbor. (Synopsis from http://www.allromanceebooks.com)
False Colors
Review by Jasmine
5/5 Whips in the Backseat
We love a man in uniform. Two men in uniform is well a double treat, as is Alex Beecroft's writing. Truthfully I thought my eyes would glaze over when I saw the number of pages and that it was Navy intensive. Lines, and knots, and sails, not usually my cup of tea. It never happened. I loved the tension, and the action. The time spent at sea was enjoyable to read about even for a land lover like me.
My limited experience with the idea of the historical Navy life - multiple viewings of Pirates of the Caribbean - did not detract from my enjoyment of the story. The tension of a complex man like John Cavendish who is facing a time period less accepting of homosexuality and a career that makes being discovered a death warrant, drew in my heart into the tale. Alex Beecroft grabbed me with her characters and the struggle to have their love and hide it.
Love between male characters in historicals is a concern. I enjoy the romance. I enjoy the love story but the HEA never sits well. I worry about the boys. What if they get caught? What if another Navy man suspects? I would definitely read more of Alex Beecroft's work and actually looking forward to visiting the high seas again.
