So how does a moderately successful m/m romance writer spend her Friday evenings? I can’t speak for anyone else, but I like to spend mine at The Wine Merchant, a local wine shop with international flavor. I admit it, I’m a wine snob. I have been since I first discovered wine, almost twenty years ago, as a junior in college in Dijon, France. Yes, that’s right. I had the very good fortune to spend an extended period of time not just in the premier wine producing region of the world, but living with the son of a vintner whose youngest daughter married into a family of vintners.

I am spoiled.

The semester in France did wonders for my appreciation of Burgundy wine, but there’s a whole, big world out there, and with the help of a good friend and The Wine Merchant, I’m slowly discovering it a region at a time. The wine tastings are not only a great way to discover new wines (I almost never go home without a bottle or few), they’re also a great way to spend an evening with friends. Whether it’s just Nessa and me or whether we have a huge crowd, the casual atmosphere and go-at-your-own pace evening provide a great social venue. Nessa and I have plotted entire stories, solved the world’s problems—or at least our own—and critiqued the latest round of movie or TV offerings, among other things, as we sample the best of what The Wine Merchant has to offer.

Being a writer is, by its very nature, a somewhat solitary occupation. I don’t know very many writers who can sit in a room full of people and concentrate on the characters in their heads. Inspiration, however, requires outside stimulation and the wine tastings are a perfect opportunity for me to blend my love of wine with my occasional need to get out of my house and into the rest of the world. I can mingle or not, observe or participate, enabled by the glass in my hand to maintain my silence by sipping at the opportune moment or to join in a conversation by making an observation about the wine I’ve just sipped. And the things I overhear! If I wrote humor, I’d have a never-ending supply of funny moments from the evenings, snatches of conversation that probably made perfect sense in context. I don’t have the whole story, though, just that random line, to which I can attach any context I want. The best one yet? “It’s not that I sell drugs or anything, but….” The rest of the utterance was lost to the noise of the crowd, but I bet we can all finish that sentence.

Go ahead. Give it a try. You never know. There might be a writer lurking inside of you too.

The people I work with are wonderful, but none of them possess fangs or claws. They don’t tear down my door looking for blood . . . or sex.

On weekends, I find little inspiration as I travel this island oasis. I’m distressed to always find myself sticking my bare feet into the hot sand of one of the many white sand beaches that surround my home. I weep as I wade into the warm waters of the Pacific. I curse each time I hike to the top of a dormant volcano in order to experience breathtakingly beautiful views of the island.

I am not (although I am inextricably drawn to any book written about these blood thirsty, sexy fiends).

In all honesty, I have enjoyed every minute of my time in paradise. I love my day job and my co-workers. I love the sun. I love the beaches and the warm water.

I also love to write. I write hot, steamy erotic romance of every sort. Straight, gay, lesbian, ménage . . . you name it, I write it. And do scenes from my little corner of heaven make their way into my stories? Quite often, yes.

Why are Exotic Places just so much more romantic? I know I would love to be walking around Rome and swept off my feet. Or have a Scot carry me out of the Pub over his shoulder for romp. Oh and let's see what else there might be...

Sometimes they are sheiks, or other dark and dangerous sorts. Or Greek tycoons - though those are most popular with Harlequin. I want an island in the sun and a tanned, well muscled man to rub me down. The coast of Spain. The city of Paris. Vienna, Prague, London, Tokyo, Iceland, they all sound very tempting. I have not been on vacation in a while if you have not guessed. My wanderlust is getting the better of me.

Spring is in the air and I am having a taste for love abroad. Anyone else feeling it?

Convincing Arthur By Ava March was my first dive into a M/M erotic romance. I was unsure of what to expect. But I thought the authur did a great job at writing this story. I thought the setting was beautiful and the characters were easy to relate to. You understand Leopold desire to have some one that he has watched so long from afar and Arthur's reluctance to jump into another relationship after his 10 year relationship has just ended. The romance between the two people was heart touching and there was plenty of very hot sex scenes to make your belly flutter, your knees bounce and seat squirm.

Book one was great - Bound by Deception. How can I not enjoy revisiting Oliver and Vincent? The book is well written, the characters trials are just as dramatic and tension filled as when we first meet the boys, all in all it is a pleasure to revisit a favorite couple.

Okay that being said here is the issue I have run into, M/M historicals face an even greater challenge in suspending my disbelief to offer the Happily Ever After. The boys face a culture and time not open to out and out homosexual relationships. So I worry about them.

What do they face when the book ends? What life will bring their way concerns me, more then I worry about other couples at the end of a book. This sequel to Oliver and Vincent's story kinda reinforces this fear. There are still things out there to throw a bump in the road. Though I suppose no bump no story and then I really would have missed out as a reader.

The tension is high, the emotion gripping, the story riveting. I was relieved to check up on two favorite characters. Read this one? I say, Yes, Yes, Yes! I feel like the boys are doing well and the second peek into their Romance was a pleasure. So boys and girls to reading and finding HEA.

I may have said this before but I am a sucker for a story where there has been love and pining from afar for years. All that caught up desire and emotion. The yearning that has had time to thicken and age, is a fabulous plaything in the hands of a talented author which Ava March certainly is.

The story caught me from page one and I was drawn in. Oliver's life is what we might have been lucky to have should we have been born back in 1822. Not too poor, no rookery, scullery maid, or life as a street sweep, just not the rich life of the majority of historicals. It pulls at the heart strings to see the complex and varied life and characters that are in the story.

On the Romance end? When you love two characters how can you not want them to be together? Let's put it this way, it is a ROMANCE - if they do not get together after you have handed me a book claiming it is a romance I will find you. You will feel my betrayal Authors. Beware the reader who has had their expectations scorned...

To wrap up. I got this one and went after Terry Kate to get MORE of this authors work. A well deserved 5 out of 5.

I have been thinking about money. Let's face it who has not. Times are tight, the stress is making my pant's feel that way too. -I am a nervous eater. - So back to the point and the relevance to us as book readers. I was looking through reviews and debating. Are readers more likely to buy a book we recommend if it is less expensive? Is there a price that is too high?

If we are talking price how do we quantify it? I loved the book - but 99% of the time I got it for free. What about the readers? Is the whole story worth $5.99? The book has 279 pages. Is the book worth $.0214 a page? Flirt by Laurell K Hamilton costs $.125 per page and there are some blank pages in that number as well as large print. So how does the break down effect you? Should we figure in the number of times we re-read the book?

This week we are going to be looking at this and hearing from some publishers as they weigh in on the issue so please leave your questions and lets talk. We will also be looking back over our previous reviews and seeing if price puts them in a new light.

This is not only the first book in a series by Elle Amour, it is the first book written by Lise Fuller’s under this new pen name and her first foray into “futuristic erotic romance”. According to Lise, “The short of it is that I want people to identify the type of book. Although still rife with action, these are even more erotic.” Okay, enough of giving you the author’s background. On to Claimed.

What can I say? There is PLENTY of sex, a little bondage, interplanetary travel, ‘droids, cougar sex, one horrendously sick bad guy and a set-up for the next book in the series. I had 2 problems with the book.

First, the sex was so fast and furious most of the time, sometimes taking little more than a paragraph, I found myself tempted to skip the sex part to see what happened next.

Second, the middle of the book was jumping so fast from one situation to another and back that I found myself backtracking to try to keep the story straight.

Other than that, It was a good read and kept my attention. I liked how Trista got through several situations that would have normally had her screaming for a straight jacket by believing she was in a hospital under sedation and she was merely dreaming. She finally realizes she really IS in a space ship, really IS “bonded” to Rurik and really DID have a most unusual bonding ceremony.

My Rating: 4.75 out of 5 Whips

This is Juniper Bell’s 2^nd book for Samhain Publishing and my first chance to read her. What can I say? Hot is not the least of it. To quote the warning following the synopsis in the book: “This title contains explicit sex, bondage, ménage, ingenious use of office furniture, lingerie, and the occasional sex toy. Oh, and did I mention the package delivery guy?”

Yes, this book has all of that, but even so, it’s a compelling read simply because it’s all about discovery. Dana’s discovery of sensual pleasures outside of the normal guy-girl-dinner-movie-sex-in-the-car-or-on-the-couch kind of pleasures she’s known in the last 7 of her 22 years growing up on Long Island. Simon’s discovery of limits and boundaries he’s never confronted before. And Ethan’s discovery that, although he’s the Senior Partner in the firm, he doesn’t always get everything his own way!

In this story, you keep waiting to see what will happen next because you only see it as it happens to Dana. No switching to Simon’s point of view, no 3^rd party observer or omniscient narrator. All you get is what Dana sees, feels, hears and thinks. And what she sees, feels, hears and thinks is purely HOT! Belly-warming, toe-tingling, keep you warm on a cold night in Alaska (where Juniper lives) HOT.

If you like your relationships spicy, with a possibility of danger, but with the promise of complete trust between a man and a woman, you have got to check out this book.

The story takes place in some other time and in some other place that we get very few details about. The beauty of the lake where Lanai and Ayre first meet is briefly described, but the intense love scene that followed made up for the lack of lake description.

I liked that Ayre gave up playing his flute, which was supposed to be the one thing that he loved above anyone or anything to protect the people who were directly affected by the emotion he was feeling when he played. I thought Lanai could have used a little more back bone, she gave up kinda easy on the man that was supposed to have been the first man she ever loved, but I liked that she got even by cursing his beloved flute. You go girl!

I felt that the story was a little rushed and lacked some detail, but since it is a very short book its understandable. The Enchanted Flute would be great for an afternoon quickie. It had a feel good ending and a very hot sexy love scene. I give it a 3.5

We love a man in uniform. Two men in uniform is well a double treat, as is Alex Beecroft's writing. Truthfully I thought my eyes would glaze over when I saw the number of pages and that it was Navy intensive. Lines, and knots, and sails, not usually my cup of tea. It never happened. I loved the tension, and the action. The time spent at sea was enjoyable to read about even for a land lover like me.

My limited experience with the idea of the historical Navy life - multiple viewings of Pirates of the Caribbean - did not detract from my enjoyment of the story. The tension of a complex man like John Cavendish who is facing a time period less accepting of homosexuality and a career that makes being discovered a death warrant, drew in my heart into the tale. Alex Beecroft grabbed me with her characters and the struggle to have their love and hide it.

Love between male characters in historicals is a concern. I enjoy the romance. I enjoy the love story but the HEA never sits well. I worry about the boys. What if they get caught? What if another Navy man suspects? I would definitely read more of Alex Beecroft's work and actually looking forward to visiting the high seas again.

This story has your heart breaking with the lead character from the very beginning with the falling of the Towers and her life as she knew it. I was enthralled by the sexy, sweet, yet stubborn cowboy that decides to play her knight in shining armor, who also has a sad past of his own.

The background of this story is a woman who has lost everything decides to start over in the Wyoming countryside and raise horses. She gets there and is in an accident where she has to be rescued by her cowboy who then needs rescuing in return a few days later. I like the added twist of her being “sensitive” to things.

The romance in the story starts in the beginning with them both getting over losing a loved one and learning they can love again while not forgetting about their previous love. I really enjoyed the love scenes, they were VERY steamy and detailed, almost made you feel like you were there.

The only things I really didn’t like was I wanted more interaction with the supporting characters and a few more little details throughout the story, but it was still really good and I would recommend it to anyone whether it be a person who likes contemporary, western, or even paranormal as there is a little in it with the sensing aspect.

TERRY KATE: Was the flipable book your idea?

DARREN MICHAELS: Yes, well I can't take all the credit, I have a muse or 2 that help me out with ideas and I run my stories by them, but the flipable book was my idea. I wanted the name and the book to be interactive and unique. Hence the name, "Flipside Erotica" because you flip the book from one side to another to read, and you can read either side of the story.

TK: So how have the ladies been treating you?

DM: Haha. How did I know that question was coming? I do okay. I do pretty well, I dont look like Igor that tends to help, and I recently learned to manscape; is that the right word?

TK: It is a well... ocean of estrogen in this field.

flipside.erotica: LOL Very VERY true. That's one of the reason I wanted to write this book. I wanted to show what guys think, and what guys think WOMEN think. I have a blog about that, the misconceptions between what we think and what we actually think from both sexes. It's AMAZING!
TK: So you are not claiming to know what women think?

DM: HA NO!

TK: We just get to read what you think women think?

DM: If anything this process has taught me how little I know about how women think. You get to read what I have LEARNED women think. I am very fortunate to have some great female friends who are very honest with me and they read what I write and are some of the best critique partners anyone could have. So when and if I go off the rails they give me a swift kick.

TK: I hope the kick is well aimed

DM: I don't claim to know what women think any more than any female writers claim to know what men think.

TK: So what got you the swiftest kick in the rear? What did the ladies think was your biggest mistake?

DM: Hmmm. Great question. The most memorable kick was on the second volume of the book which I'm working on now. I was having difficulty with a scene, and a great friend told me that something Men think is important women couldn't care less about.

TK: Yes...

DM: She said, "You men think that's all that counts, when really, it's nothing compared to everything else, thats why we have to train each and everyone of you. We have to re-train you every time. The first time we're with you is really just a tutorial." My mouth about hit the floor. Here she was telling me that everything Men think about sex is really just wrong and that Women "tutor" us. And have to re-train us to their satisfaction. After awhile I understood where she was coming from and the story she helped with was one of the best in the book in my opinion.

TERRY KATE: What makes your books Erotica and not Erotic Romance?

DARREN MICHAELS: Mainly the fact that they are one encounter stories. There's not a build up of the relationship in the beginning or a continuation of the relationship.

TK: What do you feel the difference is?

DM: I think that is the difference, Erotica is about the act, where as erotic romance is about the relationship and the act and what the act means in the relationship, there is a build up to it and a continuation after it.

TK: Why not Romance? What attracts you to the moment - the encounter, why not go further?

DM: Why don't I write romance?

TK: Yes why?

DM: I am in the process of trying to write an erotic romance but when I have tried in the past, the result has not been as intended. I really wanted to write a book like this of just encounters from both perspectives. I'm working on a series of stories with the same theme from both perspectives that are longer than these stories but still erotic romance and not just romance. I like the edge that erotic romance brings to the story.

TK: So stories without the naughty parts... not really working for you?

DM: LOL, I like stories without the naughty parts, I just think that if you leave out the sex, you're leaving out an integral part of any relationship. I like writing the naughty parts, it's fun.

TK: So what is the feed back been like?

DM: Amazing! Many women are buying the book to read with their partners. Reading it together or reading it apart and then talking about it. I was told that it was a great Valentines day or anniversary gift. It is something both partners can share.

TK: Have you done any signings?

DM: I have done one, but I have a very conservative day job right now, so its a little difficult to do an erotica signing on the weekend and then go back to work Monday morning at my very conservative company. And people can always get in contact with me and send me the books to sign and send back to them.

TK: So what is this conservative job?

DM: Ha ha, I'm going to chose not to answer that, sorry. Have to keep the job that pays the bills until I hit that NYTimes Bestseller list.

TK: Hmmm... now what could it be... I guess we will just have to sit and wonder. Any deep dark secrets you got that you are willing to confess to? Stuffed bunny colection? Watch Glee on Wednesday nights?

DM: hmmmm... Actually yes to the later. GREAT show! Can't wait to see what happens with the rest of the season, and Community is hilarious as well.
And I do not have a stuffed bunny collection. Thank you. Now that I've confessed to watching Glee I think I feel a little lighter inside.

TK: Well I'm glad I could help.
DM: LOL I think I have just had a breakthrough.

This is a very sexually explicit book. If you are sensitive to adult material (including bondage and submission), this might not be for you. However, If you like it hot, buy this book.

Many of us have been in bad or unhealthy relationships. Sometimes, even long after the relationship is over, there is still "stuff" that seems to bind us to the person we are no longer involved with. This story begins with a perhaps Wiccan or Pagan ritual of "cutting" the ties that keep us bound and often unable to move on.

Ryan has other ideas as well. He has been infatuated with Maddie for some time. They have been long time friends. He is the one who suggests the ritual and helps Maddie cut those ties.

The story in itself is wonderful. I loved the sensuality, passion and heat. I loved the interplay between Maddie and Ryan. Their history seemed to make the heat even steamier. With that said, I did have a few problems. One, the language is very formal. I found that at times, it caused me to stumble in my reading. Two, it was too short. There were at least a couple of spots in the book where I would have like more detail. The backstory for the ritual is not revealed until late in the book. An earlier explanation of characters' motivation could help the story's development. Three, "HFN", it felt like a "happily for now" story.

I guess I am a bit of a traditionalist when I am reading a romance. I want the hero and heroine to live happily ever after. I was kind of left wondering, "what now?". Do they end up together, or is there one more bondage scene and then they call it a day?

In conclusion, would I read this author again? Hell, yes. I enjoyed the sex play and passion. Would I buy her books? Hell, yes.
So with that said, here is a three part point scale:Hotness--5 out of 5; Story--4.5 out of 5; Romance--3.5 out of 5, for an average of 4.3 out of 5.

   A sexy masked man with a dark and tortured past - Yum. A tough soldier in uniform willing to make sacrifices for his love - Yum. The two of them together - Yum Yum! We have complicated men, in a complicated time. Did I believe their love? Yes. Janos's salvation? Love concurring all? Well 1750 was a precarious time for anyone, two gentlemen in love does give me some concerns as to Happily Ever After, but I am sure as hell rooting for them.

   The novella was impossible to put down. Sometimes I wish that I had it as a physical book to chuck at our main character Janos. Has anyone else had one of those moments?

"Janos did not trust. If he did once, he’d forgotten how.
Still, he wanted and waited for Stefan to look back. A single
glance was all he needed to chase him down and reveal all.
Just a glance, but Stefan never looked back." Pg 60 The Highwayman

My issue was Janos never changed - the situation reveals him - he does not grow to trust. Plus at that moment when I really wanted him to crack a little and reach out to his lover, he just remained quiet and I would have aimed the book at his head and let loose.

The Highwayman is a great read and Ali Katz writes a well layered tale. If you enjoy M/M and historicals this will be right up your alley. Pun intended.

WOW talk about a girl's fantasy come true! She doesn't just have one guy she has a thing for, but THREE, and the amazing part is they all feel the same way about her (and each other).

The backdrop is they live on a planet where women are highly cherished since there are so few of them and have to find a lifemate by the age of 25 because of a law that is in effect. We come into the story a couple days before the female turns 25 and has to choose between three very different, yummy guys that she has known all her life. There is also some suspense from a very jealous power hungry evil person who wants her for himself and will do whatever to ensure it.

The romance in the story is between ALL of the 4 characters, there is some M/M, M/F, M/F/M, etc. The scenes are all very steamy hot and you will need a fan to cool down while reading.

The biggest thing I didn't like was it was too short, I thought it could have been dragged out a little longer, throw in some more suspense, cajoling the Elders, and a little longer with the lifemate ceremony, but overall a steamy short story to get you hot quick, crest, and roll over wishing for more.

Terry Kate: Okay, so I opened the door to the Backseat and welcomed in the very exciting author Shelli Stevens. Shelli 2010, you ready?
Shelli Stevens: I'm ready!

TK: Shelli what have you got coming our way as readers?

Shelli: Well, let's see. January 19th I have Four Play, an ebook novella, which is a Red Hot! romance from Samhain Publishing. Then in the summer I have two print books, Need Me from Kensington Aphrodisia, and Chances Are from Samhain. Then I also have a novella coming out from Samhain, title not set in stone yet :P

TK: Wow, you have been busy! Four Play is a provocative title, who are these four?

Shelli: Well, it's four best friends. Three men, one woman. The book is a futuristic, where men out number women. So women have duty to pick a lifemate by a certain age. My heroine is trying to narrow it down between her three best friends (the guys) and is realizing she wants them all!

TK: Oh my! What is a girl to do?

Shelli: Exactly...have a little fun deciding I suppose. ;)

TK: What was your favorite part about creating the future of the human race? I like a landscape where I get my choice of desirable men by the way, so thanks. If we visualize it enough it might just happen.

Shelli: I know, right? A world full of single men...lovely! I enjoy creating the future of the human race, because there's all kinds of possibilities, no rules necessarily. There' s a lot of freedom in it. Plus, certain romantic situations may not be as frowned upon...people might be more open-minded. Well, one would hope.

TK: What rules have your characters broken before?

Shelli: Hmm I'm not sure rules are broken necessarily. But I mean, you're not strapped into today's society standards and laws and such. You can write your own government, planet, lifestyle and such.

TK: When you write your contemporary novels what are the challenges there?

Shelli: Hmm, getting facts right. Sometimes I get a little nervous with my characters' career choice :P You know, I don't really want to completely screw up in the book. It's a lot more research. Same with historicals though (which I don't write, but love to read). I love writing contemporary though, because it's easier to let the humor slide in.

TK: In Four Play was there one hero who came to you before the others?

Shelli: No, I really knew what I wanted with my heroes. I, of course, had my favorite hero out of three. The one I knew I would've picked if I could only have one. Hee hee.

TK: Can we tempt you to share? Who would you have chosen?

Shelli: Share which one? Hmmm. Dare I admit? Perhaps I should just say that in this book, the bad boy was really the one who caught my attention. But I go back in forth in what I love in a hero. That's why this book was so much fun. I got to have three archetypes.

TK: Do you fall for the bad boy? Is there any Hollywood hunk who lights your fire?

Shelli: You know interestingly I don't really fall for the bad boy...or no, wait, that's not entirely true. There's been a bad boy or two who've caught my interest, but because they're so bad... it doesn't last :P Hollywood Hunk, hmm? I used to lust after Joaquin Pheonix before he got all hobo-on-mushrooms like on me. Still, I can close my eyes and remember him in the movies of yesteryear....

TK: I can not wait to get my hands on your new book in the new year. What are you looking forward to in 2010?
Shelli: I'm looking forward to being healthy, writing and read lots of great books, and just having another great year.

Sexy Sunday - Who Rocked the Red Carpet?

2010 Golden Globe Awards

I’m taking off my writers’ cap, so that I might write today as a fan. The Golden Globe Awards airs tonight, the lineup looks promising, and it is my pleasure to be talking to you today about the men who will be showcased. 2009 offered some great films and some phenomenal new series, and with those came a number of talented and yummy new actors into the spotlight. While we saw many familiar names (much to my dismay, the gorgeous Hugh Jackman made only one movie last year and did not receive any nominations), 2009 introduced some great new hunks. It will be interesting to see who takes this year’s awards. I’m personally rooting for a couple of newbies, pleasantly surprised by the level of hot emerging talent I’ve seen over this past year.

As for the hottest Golden Globe nominee, I can’t help but choose Sam Worthington in James Cameron’s Avatar. There’s something about watching a long-haired, muscular body in a loincloth, blue-skinned or otherwise, that catches my attention. Moreover, when it comes to aliens, my inner geek always seems to win out. CG enhancements and loincloth aside, this man is hot—he has a phenomenal physique and an adorable smile, and his presence on-screen is spectacular. An Australian actor, his American credits are slim, but he has played in a short list of Hollywood roles and is slated to play Perseus in the upcoming remake of Clash of the Titans. I think he’ll look smashing in ancient Greek attire.

   Did I love this story? Hell yes! I have re-read it a dozen times. I read the excerpt and was so interested I could not wait to get a review copy, so I bought it. I PAID MONEY FOR THIS BOOK. I have not bought a book in almost a year. So yes I read the excerpt and I was desperate.
   This is a M/M romance between a vampire and a prostitute and it is one of the most captivating stories I have read. Why these two? They are who they are - no, I was molested and wanted financial security so I became a prostitute. There was no - my family was massacred and I am all alone and a vampire, so that is why I am tired of the world. Maikel and Arjen move forward from where they are as Aislinn skillfully weaves her tale and how these two men come together is gut wrenching.

Oh goody, goody, I talked the fabulous erotic author Aislinn Kerry
into the Backseat with me! So Aislinn, have you always leaned toward the naughty side with your writing? Does it ever worry you that Santa might stop bringing you resents?

Aislinn Kerry: Oh, definitely not. When I first started writing, I
was painfully shy. The first love scene I wrote was a very tame
fade-to-black, and I was dreadfully self-conscious about it. It's been
a process, slowly growing more and more comfortable with more explicit scenes and stories. As for Santa -- This year's been my best
Christmas yet, so I must be doing something right. grin

TK: Okay so I confess I almost never have read an authors book before I interview them. Spank me I know. Today however I have read Blood and Roses and I am leaning towards it being my favorite read in 2009.

Aislinn: Wow! Thanks so much. Blood and Roses really holds a special place in my heart.

TK: If you started out shy where did the jump to male/male books like Blood and Roses come from?

Aislinn: It was a gradual corruption. I'm lucky enough to have some
fantastic writing buddies I work with, many of whom are fond of m/m romances, and their enthusiasm for it helped me discover my own interest in it. I haven't looked back since!

TK: What struck me about your writing was the unapologetic characters you create - or maybe just that they make no excuses for where life has lead them. What made you decide that a love story that features a male prostitute and a vampire would capture the reader, or what about it captured you?

Aislinn: The part of the story that captured me is less what Arjen
and Maikel are, and more who they've become because of that.
Prostitution has made Arjen jaded, cynical, and very guarded with his emotions. And Maikel's age and the constant adoration he receives has made him terribly bored with life. Neither of them are the sort to fall head-over-heels for someone, or to bare their heart once they have. The journey of how they do so, how they do find themselves in love with one another despite everything, is really what held my fascination.

TK: I feel that many authors would give us tortured back story leading to this moment in these men's life, were you tempted?

Aislinn: I can't say that I was. For me, the real interest of the
story lies in Arjen and Maikel and their interactions with one
another, they way they conflict with one another and work past each
other's defenses and really take one another by surprise. I have
written stories where characters had traumatic histories that were
important to the plot, but even then, I try to keep my focus on the
present, and even in those stories I tend to not reveal much of the
backstory until pretty late in the game.

TK: Why a vampire? Could they both have been human?

Aislinn: I'm sure they could have, in another writer's hands, but I'm
a fantasy writer at heart. I'm drawn to the supernatural, the
mysterious, the things that go bump in the night. When I first started
writing, I imagined myself as a fantasy author, and was a little
startled when my mom started telling my relatives that I was going to be a great romance writer. That was back when I couldn't write a
fade-to-black love scene without blushing to the tips of my toes, and
I've since come to embrace my love of romance, but fantasy is part of my foundation and it's what I always find myself coming back to.

TK: So in the future m/f, m/m, where is the muse leading you?

Aislinn: I'm currently finishing up the last book in a duology
that's been a lot of fun to write. M/m romance, pirates, swashbuckling, battles at sea... There's also an m/f romance about a selkie waiting to be written, and even possibly my first foray into science fiction. My list of ideas waiting to be written is a mile long, and it seems like I add to it every day. I've already got my goals and projects planned out to the end of the year, and it's going to be very busy, but I'm really looking forward to the stories that are waiting to be told.

TK: Many of your books are novellas and shorter works, does that help you get to all your ideas?

Aislinn: Oh goodness, I don't think I'll ever get to all my ideas.
But I like the length of novellas because they let me tell a story
that's very focused on the main characters and their romance. I love
novels, too, but their greater length requires an expanded scope, with subplots and a bigger cast. I think for romance especially, novellas can give a much more intimate feel that I really enjoy.

Ultimately, though, I let the story determine the length, and I rarely
start a book with much more than a vague idea of how long it might end up being. I'm notoriously bad about predicting my own wordcounts. A book that I expected to run about 40,000 words recently turned into a 90,000 word novel on me, and I once thought that I was writing a standalone novel only to realize, as I approached the 100k mark, that it was going to take two books to tell the story. And to add insult to injury, it then turned into a trilogy!

Pirates and Romance with Aislinn Kerry

One of the first romances I remember reading, stolen from my mom's well-stocked shelves, was about a sailor woman and the pirate who fell in love with her. It's been more than a decade since I read that book, but I still remember it, and can cite whole passages. What is it about pirates that captures our imagination so readily? They're lawless, often ruthless, and not the sort of men I'd choose to hang out with at a coffee shop. But between the covers of a book? Oh boy. I just can't resist.

Pirates are the ultimate alpha male. Tough and strong, decisive, a natural leader -- he'd have to be, to lead his crew -- they're the epitome of many traits that make us swoon. They're independent, eschewing the strictures of society to carve their own way in life. And then there's the inherent appeal of the setting -- the open ocean, glorious sunsets, the primal struggle against nature when a storm rolls in. And personally, I think there's nothing sexier than a strong, strong-willed, independent rogue who finds himself humbled by love.

I recently finished writing my first pirate novel, and it was just as much fun as I'd hoped it would be. Conall is everything that's made me swoon for pirates since I snuck that first novel off my mom's bookcase -- strong, competent, confident, and fiercely loyal to those who've earned it. I can't wait to introduce him to readers!

I agree with Alix and totally forgot about his time as a pirate - James Cavezil in the Count of Monte Christo - which is an awesome awesome film I can not recommend enough.

Sure thing Jasmine - Any boat or ocean going man counts as far as I am concerned. I love it when a man spanks a woman in these old films and they add music and it is just good old fun and all right. Make it John Wayne doing the spanking and I might line up myself!

Really all the hotties in Pirates of the Carribean makes this category easier! I like me some Norrington too Yvette. Even when he is less then clean, well often then he is too hot. In a picture I do not have to smell whatever it is making him that dirty!
